What is Hypnosis?
Many people think hypnosis is like the stage hypnosis shows they've seen where people seem to be unable to control themselves, act goofy and provide entertainment for the audience.
In reality it is a state of focused concentration where the body and mind relax together. Hypnosis is very simply: a natural state of mind in which the body and mind are extremely relaxed and yet the mind is also highly aware and focused. As you will read below, we are all in states of hypnosis many times a day automatically, so hypnosis is a very normal state of being that along with it's ability to provide emotional and physical healing, has been widely and successfully used within the medical community for pain relief and hypno-anesthesia.
Your Amazing and Wonderful Mind!
The Conscious part of your mind is what you are reading this with, and when you are awake, it is aware of all that goes on in and around yourself, what you are feeling, thinking and experiencing, allowing you to know what you are doing and why.
Think of your Subconscious mind as an internal computer that houses thousands of computer programs on which everything you have ever seen, heard, experienced, thought or believed are stored. The belief systems housed here are what will actually create your reality when it comes to reprogramming for childbirth. You are not consciously aware of these subconscious processes, but they influence how you feel and think based on what you believe. It is here, in the inner mind, where positive change takes place.
These two parts of the mind actually mesh together nicely when we are children, up to about the age of 6-8 years of age, without any interference. That is why children are so suggestible; so easily influenced. They are literally in a state of hypnosis all of the time, open to suggestion.
After about 6 - 8 years of age we develop a division between the conscious and subconscious parts of the mind, called the Critical Faculty.
If you think of your conscious mind as the outer circle in the above diagram and your subconscious as the solid, inner circle, the Critical Faculty is the guardian that filters millions of pieces of information coming into the subconscious at all times. It only allows a few pieces of information to pass through at any one time, so getting to the subconscious mind is a process of distracting the "guardian", so that we can create positive change.
In Hypnobabies, our goal is to make the guardian "rest" so that we can access the inner mind and give it new concepts! The fastest and easiest way is by using hypnosis. When you relax your body and then your mind, a state of hypnosis is achieved in which the Critical Faculty can get a rest and you can access and re-program your subconscious computer for your own good.
You are not taking anything out; you are simply giving yourself new belief systems that will help you to have an easy and comfortable birth. Think of yourself now as a computer re-programmer. Using hypnosis, as these new concepts become a part of your inner mind and belief system, your subconscious mind is like a child and will take everything literally, accepting them with ease as long as they continue coming on a daily basis. It is also kind of lazy and would like to just go back to thinking the way it always has, so you must constantly reinforce your hypnotic suggestions or it will only work partially for you. As much effort as you put in, that's how much compensation you will reap. An interesting fact about hypnosis is that the more you practice it, the easier it gets. Each time you allow yourself to enter hypnosis, you will go in easier, faster and deeper. This is simply exercising your mind, very much like physical exercise works on the body, and it will get stronger and more effective with each session.
All Hypnosis is Self-Hypnosis!
You are always in control of your mind and your body while in hypnosis. You choose to enter hypnosis, stay in hypnosis, accept the suggestions, and emerge from hypnosis at all times.
Hypnosis is a state of relaxation in which you are;
1. In total control and.
Hypnosis is not;
1. Being controlled by someone else
Examples of everyday hypnotic states which you have already experienced naturally:
So hypnosis is a very natural state of being that we all experience many times a day already.. to regenerate and renew..., and we are simply helping the process along during hypnosis sessions, just like programming a computer to produce a document, project or program that will produce positive results!
Hypnosis has proven to be one of the most effective means of bringing about the changes you desire in your life. While in hypnosis your conscious, or critical mind (the part that's analyzing this now), is temporarily turned down and you work directly with the hidden, feeling mind where real change takes place quickly. Hypnosis is a SAFE, natural response which allows you greater control over all aspects of your life. Your conscious mind is powerful. Your subconscious mind is infinitely more powerful!
In addition, many women have experienced completely painless childbirth with hypnosis. Dental patients can endure even root canals comfortably, without anesthetic using hypnosis, and medical surgery is also performed under hypnosis on those having allergies to anesthesia, with great success. These therapies are being used much more commonly, and they illustrate the amazing results possible through hypnosis and self-hypnosis.
Hypnosis and you:
Hypnosis is truly the "people's therapy" and has proven effective in a variety of areas including: smoking cessation; losing weight; gaining confidence; recalling and overcoming trauma; overcoming panic ; anxiety and insomnia. And there are no harmful side effects. For more in-depth hypnotherapy, contact a certified hypnotherapist in your area. Many issues can be successfully treated through use of self- hypnosis tapes.
Whether you're a frustrated student wanting to get truly excited about learning ("Effective Studying"), a smoker who's really ready to quit ("Stop Smoking"), or a pregnant woman wanting an unmedicated birth without suffering, hypnosis is for you.
What does hypnosis feel like?
Hypnosis is a means of moving into a perfectly natural state of mind that people actually move in and out of several times in a day. Have you ever had the experience of driving along the highway and suddenly realizing that you passed your exit several miles back? Or been so caught up in a book or movie or video game that you don't even realize that someone has been speaking to you for the past several minutes? THAT is hypnosis. So you see, when a hypnotist induces you into hypnosis they are not asking you to experience anything strange or that you haven't experienced before.
Can anyone be hypnotized?
Anyone of at least average intelligence, who can follow directions can be hypnotized. Occasionally, a person may need several attempts before actually entering into hypnosis. What causes this? Generally, it's holding onto a little bit of fear- fear of loss of control. This is actually a misunderstanding as the proper use of hypnosis actually gives you greater control over all aspects of your life.
Will I do something against my will?
When you are hypnotized , you are aware of all suggestions given to you and you will not do anything against your moral or ethical principles. (despite what you may have seen in stage shows of hypnosis)
Will I Remember Everything That Happens in Hypnosis?
Yes, you will remember everything that happens in hypnosis if that is your desire. Occasionally a person might choose to selectively forget certain facts for a time and then bring them up later when they are more ready.
What If You Can't Bring Me Out of It?
There is no danger of a person failing to come out of the hypnotic state. In fact it would be impossible to remain hypnotized. Some people choose to stay in trance a little longer because it feels so good and it's the most relaxed they've been in their lives!
But I Can't be Hypnotized!
Again, ANYONE can be hypnotized (see above). There is no such thing as a "good" subject or a "bad" subject, only those who choose not to follow directions.
Because in hypnosis you access your subconscious or more powerful part of your mind where real, lasting change takes place. You may have heard it said that we only use 10% of our brain; hypnosis is a way to get access to that other 90% . Especially in habit and pain control, this eliminates any internal battle that may occur.
According to Roberta De Silva, Cht:
Fact: Any person of normal intelligence can be hypnotized. All that is necessary is imagination and a willingness to cooperate. The best subject is a person who has a good reason for hypnosis and a strong motivation to accomplish a particular need or desire. The ability to be hypnotized is dependent upon the ability to relax and simply listen.
For example, if you were going to learn to play the piano, your teacher would point to a particular key and say, "This is middle C." To you, that is a suggestion. You either accept or reject the fact that the note in question is middle C. If you accept, you will undoubtedly go on and learn to play the piano. If you reject the suggestion, you may eventually learn to play, but it will be a long, hard and confusing process. If you approach hypnosis with confidence, rather than fear, you will achieve your desired goals. Dave Elman, who instructs dentists in the field of hypnosis, has this to say - "Remove fear, and one hundred people out of one hundred will enter hypnosis easily."
